![]() ![]() And every enemy you encounter is in combat stance ready to kill you, in "Hidden & Dangerous" you could surprise Soldiers playing the piano or doing woodwork.īut "Hidden & Dangerous" proofs that World War 2 as a setting can be more than just looks. ![]() But your soldier still moves like an elite-athlete, your MP40 fires like a modern assault rifle, and your tank goes like a modern Abrams or Leopard. But looking at the old WW2-"Call of Dutys" and more recent WW2-shooters like "Enemy Front" those games have all one disappointing thing in common: World War 2 is just "appearance" for them. ![]() How does this all relate to lost potential for future WW2 shooters? I have noticed the demand for WW2 shooters is on the rise again, many people wish for the "Call of Duty" to return to the battlefields of Normandy, Africa and Stalingrad. ![]() (And not only because "H&D 2" actually has some RPG elements and your characters level up and improve different abilities) You can replace them at the beginning of every new sub-campaign, but you wont want to. And since you can only reequip at the start of one of the sub-campaigns, you will soon carry a ragtag ensemble of guns and equipment, scrounging everything you can.Īlso at the start of the first campaign you select four soldiers, and although not much is spoken in the game, you will absolutly grow attached. Dropping ammo will yield correctly portrayed paper-ammo packs.įurthermore the inventory system makes you feel like you really have to carry and manage weight. And of course the guns buck and spray bullets wildly even on short bursts. Tanks are lumbering monstrosities, with slow turning turrets. Instead the engine bellows on, and then the truck lurches violently forward, struggling to reach speed. Yes all those facts make it a good game, but what it makes an unique game is how the developers focused on making everything feel "1930ties / 1940ties-like": If you enter a truck and start driving it wont start immediatly and settle into a smooth ride. The surprisingly creative missions, where you have to use WW2-era minisubs to plant explosives on the Scharnhorst? The fact that you can control countless vehicles, from trucks to tanks? The fact that you can customize your Soldiers with countless weapons and equipment, which all actually show up on your Soldier ingame? "Hidden & Dangerous 2" has always been one of my favorite games, I played through it almost every year and its a game that really immerses you, it makes you really think you are in the 1940ties. ![]()
